Background of the study
Hashtag campaigns on Twitter have emerged as significant drivers of morphosyntactic change in Nigerian digital communication. Political and social movements use hashtags not only as rallying cries but also as instruments to condense complex ideas into succinct messages, often resulting in innovative morphological and syntactic structures (Okeke, 2023). Nigerian Twitter users engage in creative reordering of words, nonstandard punctuation, and the formation of hybrid expressions as they participate in hashtag campaigns. These digital movements facilitate rapid linguistic change by encouraging users to adopt truncated sentences, innovative affixations, and reconfigured syntactic patterns that challenge conventional grammar (Ibrahim, 2024). This comparative study examines how different Twitter movements—each characterized by unique socio-political contexts—influence morphosyntactic structures. It aims to document and analyze the processes by which hashtag campaigns drive language change, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of digital activism and its linguistic consequences in Nigeria (Afolabi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Although hashtag campaigns are widely recognized for their role in mobilizing political and social action, there is limited research on their specific impact on Nigerian morphosyntax. Most existing studies focus on the rhetorical power of hashtags without addressing the underlying linguistic transformations. This gap prevents a full understanding of how digital movements alter sentence structure and word formation. The study aims to fill this gap by comparing morphosyntactic changes across different Twitter movements and assessing their broader impact on digital language use (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze morphosyntactic changes induced by hashtag campaigns on Twitter.
  2. To compare these changes across different digital movements.
  3. To evaluate the implications of these linguistic shifts for Nigerian digital discourse.

Research questions

  1. What morphosyntactic changes are associated with hashtag campaigns?
  2. How do these changes vary across different Twitter movements?
  3. What broader impact do these shifts have on Nigerian digital language?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of hashtag campaigns in driving morphosyntactic innovation in Nigerian digital discourse. The insights will inform linguistic theories and enhance our understanding of language change driven by digital activism (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on Twitter and analyzes the morphosyntactic impact of hashtag campaigns within Nigerian digital discourse. It does not consider other platforms or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Morphosyntax: The interaction of morphological and syntactic features in language.
  • Hashtag Campaign: A coordinated effort using hashtags to promote political or social causes.
  • Twitter Movement: A social or political movement characterized by coordinated hashtag use.
